Plan the work
Measure every rise and run, not only one. Document landings, headroom, wall conditions and guard openings, then confirm code and permit requirements with the applicable authority.
Define the scope
Define whether work is cosmetic cladding or structural alteration. State wood species, nosing, finish, baluster system, wall rail, demolition and temporary access.
Include the project location, current photos, plans if available, approximate dimensions, desired finish and timing. For renovations, show adjacent surfaces that remain.
What careful installation involves
Consistent finished riser heights are essential. Components are fitted from verified control points; guards and rails require fastening into suitable structure, not finish surfaces alone.
Review before sign-off
- Check alignment and visual consistency from normal viewing positions.
- Operate every door, drawer or moving component.
- Confirm joints, fasteners and surfaces are ready for the agreed finish.
- Record any deficiencies and who is responsible for correction.
